Circa 2019
On August 18th 2019 Woodsetton Art Pottery we’re invited to participate in an evening event “Lapworth Lates” at University of Birmingham’s Museum of Geology. Over 200 participants attended from 7-10pm and there were a dozen geological/dinosaur/fossil activities to join including a visit from the crew of The British Antarctic Survey. This is a free (but ticketed) annual event so look out for it next August, and the museum is a treat at any time.
Woodsetton ran a mineral glazing demonstration and workshop for visitors and we came away with over 80 glaze experiments using the most obscure minerals that the museum could root out of their archives. The curators provided beautiful examples of the ores from which our clay and glazes are derived and we labelled them all with their use in ceramics and produced glazed examples of how these are transformed when subjected to the heat of our kiln. From my days as a glaze technologist in Stoke and my long interest in the nearby fossil beds, this was rather a dream project for me and we are now looking forward to initiating new works with the museum in the near future.
